So I just got some magic swords from my genius brother that can apparently divide people without harming them, and I'm alone with my achingly attractive platonic friend who seems to be interested in trying them out. What could possibly go wrong?

“Whoa...” Emily gasped while hovering over the box. She opened the bubble wrap and grabbed one of the swords, the green one, and held it in front of her. Other than it’s unusual color, it looked like an ordinary sword, no ornate etchings or anything of the like, “The power to harmlessly divide the body. If it came from anyone other than your brother, I wouldn’t believe it! But still, aren’t only seniors allowed to keep evokers?”

“Yeah, we just don’t get caught is all,” I replied. An evoker, by the way, is a magical device either infused with magic or designed to help the flow of magic, channeling the power and whatnot. They can be crafted into many shapes depending on the fighting style of the individual soldier, whatever weapon they’re most comfortable with. You can fight without them, of course, but they’re essential for taking on some of the nastier demihumans.

“So, um, do we test them out now?” She asked while examining the green blade.

“Didn’t you say you had one more class today?”

“Screw it, I can copy the notes off someone.”

“Naughty girl!” I laughed, “So, how should we start?”

“I figured we start with this green one, the other two seem a lot more complicated.”

“Hm, agreed.”

“And I figured we’d start out with the example in the letter.”

“Sure, if that’s what you wa-”

Before I finished my sentence, she swung the blade right through my right wrist. As promised, no blood, and it left a layer of skin in its wake. The cut itself was painless, but it did hurt a little bit when my hand hit the ground. Yup, looks like I can still feel and control it, too. Even though I had the utmost faith in my brother’s abilities, it still would have been nice if Emily had chosen my non dominant hand as the test subject, just in case.

“Oh my gosh, it works!” Emily placed the blade on my bed and picked up my detached hand. She squeezed it, I squeezed back, felt good. I had always wanted to hold her hand, but I never imagined it going like this. “You, uh, want this back?”

It took a few weeks to suppress those ‘I want to rub our genitals together’ feelings I had for her, and this just brought them all flooding back, causing me to stand there like a one-handed, slack jawed moron. I snapped out of it and took my hand back from her. Jason said all you had to do to undo the magic was to press the cuts together, so that’s exactly what I did. My wrist felt fuzzy for a second, and when I let go, my hand stuck. Seems it was a complete success.

“What did that feel like?” Emily asked, bending over slightly to get a good look at my wrist, which I was pulling at with my left hand to make sure it was good and stuck.

A devious grin formed on my face, “I think it would be easier if you found out for yourself.”

I reached for the blade, she stood up straight, I swung it through her neck. Her head landed with a bounce on my bed while her body spun around and hit the floor hard. As it turns out, trying to balance with your head detached is hard.

“You jerk!” her head said. She had landed on her side with her face to the wall, “Next time you cut my head off, make sure I’m sitting down first!”

Her body had begun to attempt to get up, she had worked her way onto her hands and knees when I knelt down to help her up. I then guided her to the wooden chair that had come with the dorm room, also known as the most uncomfortable sitting surface known to man. Next I picked up her head and set it back down on my bed, this time sitting on the stump of her neck and facing the rest of the room.

“Sorry about that.” I said while rubbing the back of my head.

Emily, meanwhile, was watching her body. She crossed her legs, uncrossed them, and then crossed them the other way. Very slowly, she reached her hand up to feel the cut surface of her neck and gently brushed her fingertips across it. “Tingly.” she reported, “Hey, help me stand up, I want to try walking around.”

I nodded, grabbed her hand, and pulled her up. She took a few small, cautious steps forward with her arms stretched out in front of her. I thought her body looked a bit like a shambling zombie, except a lot more pleasant to look at, even without her head. A misstep caused her to trip, but thankfully I caught her before she hit the ground.

“Good catch...” she sighed, her heart having definitely missed a beat. I helped her stand up straight again and she grabbed my hands, placing them on her waist, “Now follow me around and make sure I don’t fall again.”

I happily complied. So far, I thought these blades had been the best thing my brother had sent me, if only for how much contact I had gotten with Emily because of them. Also, without her head in the way, I had a great view down her blouse. After a few laps around the tiny dorm room, Emily began to pick up speed and I let go.

“I’m doing it! I’m doing it!” Her head chirped proudly from its perch on my bed.

“This must be what it feels like when a parent watches their kid ride a bike without training wheels for the first time.” I joked, wiping a pretend tear from my eye. Emily rolled hers.

Satisfied with her walk, Emily stopped her body and asked, “Hey, we should show these to Greta and Will. I bet they’d get a kick out of them!”

“Definitely.” I was struck with an idea. An awesome one, “But how about we play a little prank on them?”

“I’m always down for a prank. What do you have in mind?”

I picked up her head, “Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do...”
Here we go!

Losing balance makes lots of sense.  Your head controls your balance with your sinuses.  If your head suddenly detached and was on a bed, you might lose the sensation of balance your bod needs.
